The BWA Story
BodyWork Associates has a long and storied history in this community. The office began with the individual practice of the founder, Douglas Nelson, in
1982. Remember that massage therapy was almost unheard of at that time, known only in the alternative medical circles. Public perception of massage
therapy was not very flattering at the time and the medical community looked on the office with something between tolerance and disdain. We have seen
a tremendous surge in interest in massage therapy in the last twenty years. Our attitude toward this growth is very pragmatic; we know what kinds of
conditions respond to our work and we know its strengths and limitations. We were here before massage was in vogue and we will be here when it is no
longer such a darling of the popular media. We concentrate on getting results for our clients, period. This dedication and common sense approach has
resulted in many referrals from the medical community.
Over the years, additional therapists were added to the staff as the demand began to grow. The people who visited BWA were such remarkable people,
great people who were often leaders in the community, all of whom were so supportive and encouraging. Most of the growth of the office was a result of
the word-of-mouth advertising from these satisfied clients. For many years we have had more than a dozen therapists at the office, making us one of the
largest independent massage clinics in the Midwest.
We have had the good fortune to work with all manner of clients. Doug Nelson was the neuromuscular consultant to the Chicago Bulls during the Pippin-
Jordan years and also for the St. Louis Rams during their Super Bowl years. We have also seen amateur and professional musicians (and a lot of
academicians) for hand and arm problems associated with repetitive strain injuries. From eight to eighty, the clients who have graced our doors have
inspired us with their courage and desire to feel their best. It has been our privilege to be of service.
Presently we have aboutsixteen therapists who have the skills, training, and integrity you have come to expect from the leaders in massage therapy. Over
the years, many talented therapists have been a part of the BWA family. While some have had paths that have taken them to other parts of the country,
we have benefited by their legacy. We recruit and train our therapists with care and attention. New therapists are mentored and trained by senior staff so
that the care we give is the best available. Educational sessions, research studies, and study groups are a common occurrence at BWA.
